t’s not every day that a village is awarded this status together with the Knepp Estate and we are among 15 villages in 15 European countries named as a “European Stork Village”.
An absence of around 600 years, white storks have formed the first two colonies in the UK and are breeding successfully.
Storrington’s connection is in its history. The name Storrington being derived from the Saxon word “Estorcheston” meaning “abode of the storks”.
The twinning were very happy to receive this invitation, organised by the Storrington & Sullington Parish Council to celebrate this historical event. Enormous credit goes to Knepp Wildland Foundation amongst others for their dedicated work to restore white storks to Britain.
The day was packed full of interesting indoor talks by Knepp, outdoor youth activities, music, singing, Knepp outdoor kitchen and many other refreshments stands stall holders.
The stork festival was also attended by our local Parish Council, EU Stork Network (naming ceremony), Countryfile and the local press.
Please do come along next year to celebrate this annual event and support our local community.
